Does your Open Nature™ Milk Chocolate ice cream contain cocoa processed with alkali?

The ice cream does not contain cocoa processed with alkali. Alkali modifies the taste and properties of natural cocoa powder. Other brands use it because it mellows out the cocoa taste and blends more easily with other ingredients. Alkalized cocoa can be natural, as it depends on the type of alkali that is used. However, we choose not to use it because it is lower in flavanol antioxidants, and also masks the natural taste of cocoa

Open Nature™ Trail Mix

Open Nature™ trail mix does not have preservatives, added salt or sulphites that you would normally find in traditional nut and berry mixes. By removing these ingredients we have provided our customers an alternative that they can be proud to eat and share with their families.

Open Nature™ Crystal Mountain is a unique mix of dark chocolate, almonds, cashews, blueberries and cranberries. Blueberries have one of the highest levels of antioxidant activity of all fruits and vegetables, followed closely by cranberries. The cocoa in our chocolate pieces is also rich in flavanols and polyphoenols (two types of antioxidants). These benefits make an even better reason to try our trail mix!

Open Nature™ Kootenay trail mix has whole pieces of almond, cashews, pecans, macadamia, pistachios and hazelnuts and dried fruit. Almonds are high in monounsaturated fats which have been associated with reduced risk of heart disease. They also are a source of vitamin E, which has great antioxidant properties, along with the dried fruit in this mixture.

Why aren’t the nuts shiny and salty like in other trail mixes?

We use minimally processed ingredients and as few as possible, so that’s why we chose to use nuts that are only dry roasted and do not have any extra ingredients added, including salt.

Aren’t nuts too high in fat to be good for you?

Nuts are high in monounsaturated fats which have been proven to have a positive effect on your health unlike saturated and trans fats which definitely have a negative effect.

Yes. Modified corn starch is starch from corn that has been chemically treated to change its properties. We only use non modified starches in Open Nature™ products.

Open Nature™ Peanut Butter

It starts as a mountain of freshly roasted peanuts which are finely ground until the smooth and creamy treat we know as peanut butter emerges. Some companies then add hydrogenated oils, dextrose, sugar or other sweeteners before they’re done – but not us! Open Nature™ Peanut Butter is made from 100% peanuts, nothing more and nothing less. We think that the natural flavour of the peanut is just right as it is, so why mess with a good thing? Whether you like the smoothness of our Creamy Peanut Butter or the great texture of our Crunch Peanut Butter you’ll be surprised at how great natural peanut butter is once you remove all of those added ingredients!

Is it normal for there to be a layer of oil at the top of the jar? Why doesn’t this happen with other peanut butters?

Yes, the oil will naturally separate and rise to the top? Other peanut butters contain hydrogenated oils which stop the separation from occurring. If you stir the peanut butter up when you open it and keep it in the fridge the oil will not separate again.
